Also, I’m trying to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on an external also, but I get stuck at the “Preparing” Screen and the spinning circles. Nothing works by your procedure. Am using windows 7 and when I try to install Windows 7 (64) although the external drive is shown as an option, when I choose it I am informed that: windows cannot be installed to this disk. @dinescu : the install.wim should be at this path: Windows Files/ Sources/ install.wim after you copied your Windows 7 installation files like in step three above. (no changes to internal MBR drive) Thanks for your help. The instructions worked out great.

The instructions worked out great. i shout down win8 and disconnect my hdd, turn o my laptop and see blue screen say need usb or disk, i put win7 disk and boot this and use system recover, automatic find problem and fix, rebooting and boot to my win7 but now my microsoft essential security say windows did not pass genune validation, and see under screen in my background this copy of windows is not genuine. Error code 0x80070103 I have gigabites of free space on any number of partitions including my primary active. Does this really work?. windows boots up file, but all of the ram is used up making the machine lockup easily.
